THE new multi-million euro relocation of Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh secondary school in City Centre has made huge progress.

Education Minister Norma Foley has confirmed to Limerick TD Willie O’Dea that she has given the approval to tender for the construction of a new 26 classroom, 650-pupil school for Gaelcholaiste Luimni.

Willie O’Dea said, “We were delighted to get good news in relation to the Gaelcholáiste, that it is now going to construction. There are a number of contractors that will tender but they are being given a limited period to do that, so as soon as they are selected, we can then proceed to construction. The site is quite suitable and it has been lying vacant for a long time but due to the exponential increase in applications and interest in the Gaelcholáiste, I think this is a very welcome development for the people of Limerick and it has been delayed for far too long and it will be great to see it constructed over the coming months”.

The new 7,860 square metre post-primary school will be built, to include six teaching blocks connected by a central circulation corridor. In this, there will be four two-storey blocks to accommodate general classrooms, specialist rooms, circulation areas, offices, plant room, a dining hall and associated kitchen and storage areas.

The development was given the go-ahead last year by Limerick City and County Council and will now finally take place at the site of the former Dawn Dairies building in Clare Street. The school will be accessible from the Pa Healy Road by car. There will be pedestrian entrances from Clare Street, O’Brien’s Park and the Pa Healy Road.

Hard play and landscaped social areas will also be erected. The expansion comes amid an explosion in demand for places at Gaelcholaiste Luimni, which opened in 2006. Students from Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh play for local GAA teams in hurling, football and camogie, and several students are members of Irish sporting squads in soccer and basketball. A considerable number of students are also involved in the European Youth Parliament and have spoken in the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Established on July 1, 2013, Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board is the state education and training authority for the Limerick and Clare region in Ireland. It is one of 16 statutory regional education authorities established by the Education and Training Boards Act 2013. The authority delivers educational services to over 34,000 students and learners annually. It also employs 2,500 staff across the region. Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh is one of 18 post-primary schools under the authority’s patronage.
