Laurel Hill Secondary School has begun seeking design tenders for its new school building, which was approved by Minister for Education Norma Foley in June of this year.

The new 1,000-pupil campus will dwarf the existing iconic schoolhouse, which will be gifted to neighbours Laurel Hill Colaiste. The building will be fully refurbished and will accommodate over 500 gaelscoil students.

The multi-million euro development will be among the largest educational projects undertaken in Ireland in the near future, providing over 150 jobs in Limerick City.

Founded in 1844, the Laurel Hill campus is managed by Le Chéile Schools Trust, which is currently working on the tendering process alongside the Department of Education and Skills.

Laurel Hill Colaiste principal Úna Uí Ghríofa told I Love Limerick, “The development of Laurel Hill is an investment in the education of girls in Limerick City.

“Our students pride themselves on being part of a learning community where their holistic development is supported from the very moment they walk through the doors. Having access to state-of-the-art facilities will allow Laurel Hill Colaiste to continue to provide the best educational experiences and options for our students into the future.”

The development was officially launched on October 15, when Minister Foley visited the campus alongside Limerick TD’s Willie O’Dea and Keiran O’Donnell.

“We welcomed Minister Norma Foley to Laurel Hill Coláiste FCJ and Laurel Hill Secondary School FCJ, where she met student representatives from both schools and came to understand what this development means for the students,” said Colaiste principal Uí Ghríofa.

Earlier this month, some €4.4 billion in capital funding was committed to the development of school infrastructure as part of the National Development Plan 2021-2030, with several Limerick schools set to benefit.

As well as a number of county-wide school refurbishments, four schools will receive brand new premises as part of the national cash injection. These are Monaleen National School in Castletroy, Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh on Sir Harry’s Mall, Limerick Educate Together Secondary School (currently housed in the former Salesian Secondary School building) on the North Circular Road, and Mungret Community College.

Speaking at the launch of the National Development Plan, Minister Foley said of the school infrastructure funding, “We are creating modern, welcoming environments in which children can comfortably and safely learn and discover, with facilities that meet their needs and support their futures.”
