New Limerick cemetery granted planning permission with more than 3,000 plots
Mt st Lawrence is Limerick’s largest graveyard with an area of 16 acres, the proposed new Limerick cemetery in Monaleen will be developed on a more than 12-acre site.
A new cemetery for Limerick has been granted planning permission on a conditional basis by Limerick City and County Council converting a former pitch and putt course into a burial ground with over 3,000 plots
The new cemetery in the Monaleen suburb of Limerick City has been approved by Limerick City and County Council, granting permission for the development which will transform a former pitch and putt course into a burial ground with over 3,000 plots.
The plan, submitted by Eugene Harrington, includes phased development across the 5.17-hectare site, with more than 1,000 plots delivered in the first phase, with the following phases including 850 and a further 1,437 plots with the proposed cemetery also featuring Columbarium walls for cremated remains, a reflection pool, rain gardens as well as a reception plaza with staff facilities.
Despite being approved, the project initially faced appeals from local residents who lodged formal objections with concerns for anti-social behaviour, the potential impact of formaldehyde on the soil of local houses, and the impact it could have on property values.
Amenities such as 62 car parking spaces, six bicycle stands, and a reception plaza with staff facilities are also part of the project and will allow for both vehicular and pedestrian access, with a focus on maintaining and enhancing existing natural features.
Permission was granted on a conditional basis, with Limerick City and County Council imposing 11 conditions in total, including the need for a lighting design engineer to confirm lighting has been erected as per the design, a licensable archaeologist, and ten per cent of the 62 car parking spaces are required to be equipped for electrical vehicle charging, and the proper disposal of surface water run-off among other conditions.
