New Limerick Road Project: Mark Leahy, Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Liam Galvin, Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Garda Inspector Brian O’Donovan, Newcastle West and Sergeant Liam McGraynor, Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West, at the opening of the N21 Killarney Pole to Barnagh Road Safety Scheme in Limerick.

The opening of new Limerick road project took place this past week. The N21 Killarney Pole to Barnagh Road Safety Scheme was opened to traffic this Thursday, November 26, 2015.

The new 3.3-kilometre section of road, located approximately 3 kilometres west of Newcastle West on the N21 Limerick to Tralee national primary road, will cater for an estimated flow of  10,000 vehicles each day. These improvements will allow an ease in the flow of traffic and improve safety for motorists. TD Patrick O’Donovan acknowledged that the opening of this new stretch of road will help save lives. The aim of the N21 Killarney Pole to Barnagh Road Safety Scheme is to decrease the number of lives lost each year on Irish roads.

Limerick City and County Council entered into a €3.8m contract with P&D Lydon Plant Hire Ltd. for the construction of the second and final phase of the N21 Killarney Pole to Barnagh Road Safety Scheme in late December 2014.  The first phase of the scheme, between Barnagh and Garryduff Cross, was completed in March 2013, while the second and final phase involved the realignment and widening of approximately 1.4km of the existing N21 and significant improvements to the existing Junction at the Killarney Pole.
