With the approval of a new 32-classroom primary school the Monaleen National School project, which has been given the green light to proceed to tender, will include a two-storey building featuring a five-class Special Educational Needs unit and ancillary accommodations.

TD Willie O’Dea announced the development which he says is a “very exciting development” for everyone at Monaleen National School.

Deputy O’Dea said, “I recently met with the Minister for Education regarding the need for a new school building for Monaleen National School and therefore, I very much welcome this announcement by Minister Foley,” O’Dea added. “This is a very exciting development for all involved at Monaleen National School as the new school will provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for many decades to come.”

The co-educational primary school accommodate more than 800 pupils from junior infants to sixth class and the area, like much of Limerick, has been expanding over the years.

The new building aims to provide a modern learning environment that meets the growing needs of the school. The current infrastructure has been struggling to accommodate the increasing student population, and the new facilities are expected to significantly enhance the educational experience for both students and staff.

Minister for State Kieran O’Donnell also confirmed the project’s progression, noting, “Monaleen National School can now proceed for the appointment of building contractors, who should be in place by very early next year.”

Minister O’Donnell stated the school should be “ready for opening for the 2026/2027 academic school year.
