Opening of new Youth Cafe and Demonstration Kitchen at Learning Hub Limerick

Young people attending Learning Hub Limerick are very lucky as this month the final touches have been put on the new Learning Hub youth cafe space and demonstration kitchen.

This exciting project is supported by the JP McManus Benevolent Fund and also the Dept of Children and Youth. It is a long term development at the Hub as this new facility involved the major refurbishment of an older building on site.

Manager, Jennifer Moroney-Ward says “ its so exciting to see the Learning Hub youth cafe space and demonstration kitchen coming to life – we have dreamt about having a modern hang out, dining and demonstration cooking space. We now have lots of children enjoying their new cafe, cooking space and general hanging out space right in here on site. With a major focus on healthy eating and lifestyle now a major part of what we do here at the Hub this facility and what it can offer has become even more important”.

But it’s not all food and cooking – it is also a really special space for young people to hang out and just be together. The facility will have the capacity to show films, sporting events and can be booked by groups of young people and youth organiations most evenings.

James Blake Project Co-ordinator at the Hub said “When we surveyed the local young people they asked us to develop a booking system for the space. They are keen to work with us on how the plans for the space will develop. We found the suggestion around the booking system really interesting and we are looking forward to them making the space their own in the next year.”

The demonstration kitchen is also a huge added benefit to existing programmes at the Learning Hub.   Paul O’Brien and Karin Hogan who co-ordinate a lot of the health focused activity & cookery at the Learning Hub. “We hope to have lots of opportunty to link nutrition into our kickboxing club here and we are already getting chefs and cooks who are willing to give their time to the project” stated Paul.

Karin Hogan has experience of delivering family cookery on site and says “We know families are keen to learn more about healthy cooking, eating and doing this on a budget so we are really looking forward to that kind of activity here on site”.

Situated right beside the Learning Hub’s new Orchard, beehives and veggie patches this new facility will hopefully become a really useful food education facility in the heart of the city. It also has the potential to act as a fabulous cafe space for children and teenagers this summer – providing a safe and welcoming hang out spot by the sunny Shannon.
