Site mobilisation works have begun for the construction of a new 3-storey building on the site of the former Garda Station to provide a new Garda District Headquarters in Limerick.

The Newcastle West Headquarters is one of many projects being delivered under a comprehensive programme to modernise Garda buildings.

The Office of Public Works and An Garda Síochána, with the support of the Department of Justice, are working to improve and modernise Garda facilities across the country. The investment will contribute to the strategic improvement of State-owned property to deliver modern Garda facilities with various energy efficiencies.

Minister Patrick O’Donovan said, “The construction of this new Garda Station is such an important development for policing in Limerick. As well as providing a modern fit-for-purpose facility for Garda members and the visiting public, the station will meet a very high environmental standard.”

Minister for State, Kieran O’Donnell added, “When completed, this state-of-the-art facility, here in Newcastle West, will greatly assist An Garda Síochána in continuing to deliver their invaluable service to the local community and surrounding district while also providing enhanced policing infrastructure capacity in county Limerick.”

Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD said it is important that Gardaíand members of the public can “make use of modern, fit for purpose facilities”.

She said, “The benefits of a new Garda station will be felt by everyone in Newcastle West and in the towns and villages across Limerick.”

This new station is part of a large programme of work to upgrade the Garda estate. To support this work, over €220m has been invested in the Garda estate between 2020 and 2024. We have also provided a further €128m for Garda estates projects in 2025 and 2026 under the National Development Plan.”

This programme will provide new and modernised Garda stations and other facilities to support An Garda Síochána to meet the operational, functional and accommodation requirements. The projects are being delivered as part of An Garda Síochána Operating Model, which are in line with their transformation programme.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said, “I am pleased to see works commence on the new Newcastle West Garda Station at Churchtown Road. This new purpose-built station will not only greatly improve facilities for our personnel working from here, but crucially will support them in their mission of keeping the people of Newcastle West and surrounding areas safe. I acknowledge and commend the ongoing commitment of Gardaí attached to Newcastle West to providing a policing service to the local community while these works are ongoing.”
