Planning permission has been granted for a new €12 million Newcastle West Primary Care Centre medical facility.

Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan has welcomed the granting of planning permission.

The Minister of State at the Department of Finance and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform said the centre will not only provide first-class primary care services to the West Limerick town and surrounding areas but will also bring diagnostic services and treatments closer to the patient.

Minister O’Donovan said, “The granting of planning permission for this three-storey 45,000 square foot facility in Newcastle West means that a first-class primary care medical service and community based diagnostic services are one step closer.

“This building on the site of the former Pallas Foods chicken processing factor will not only house a GP clinic but will also include HSE primary care services and diagnostic facilities including radiology and ultrasound. The new multi-million euro development will accommodate Tusla while also providing services such as occupational therapy, dentistry, physiotherapy and ophthalmology services,” he added.

“Providing theses medical treatments and services in the community means that patients will not have to travel long distances or indeed go to larger hospitals for medical tests, routine appointments and treatments,” he continued.

“The new centre should allow for the people of West Limerick to be treated quicker and with more comfort in their own community. A café and pharmacy will add to the services on hand in the new building, with the 120 car parking spaces and covered bicycle parking allowing for comfortable access for patients and service users,” added Minister O’Donovan.

Minister O’Donovan said, “The Care Centre is also likely to become one of the biggest employers in the area, thereby providing continuous employment and health services for the people of the town and surrounding areas. ”
