The newly upgraded playground at Abbeyfeale Town Park has officially been opened, marking the completion of a significant investment in inclusive and accessible play facilities for local children and families.

The substantial refurbishment project was delivered by Limerick City and County Council and transforms the existing facility into a more inclusive, accessible and engaging playground for children of all ages and abilities, including neurodivergent children.

The official opening was marked by children from the local community enjoying the new playground facilities, providing an immediate demonstration of the benefits of the investment.

The project was officially opened by the Mayor of Limerick, John Moran alongside Cathaoirleach of the Newcastle West Municipal District, Cllr Liam Galvin, in the company of Minister Niall Collins TD, members of the Newcastle West Municipal District, representatives of Abbeyfeale Community Leisure CLG, Abbeyfeale Community Council and officials from Limerick City and County Council.

The upgrade was funded through a combination of local and national investment. In 2024, the Members of the Newcastle West Municipal District allocated €51,500 from their General Municipal Allocation towards the project. In addition, the Department of Rural and Community Development provided €50,000 through the 2024 Community Recognition Fund following a successful application by Abbeyfeale Community Leisure CLG, working closely with Abbeyfeale Community Council.

The project forms part of Limerick City and County Council’s ongoing objective to make all Council playgrounds fully accessible and inclusive, ensuring all children can enjoy the physical, social and developmental benefits of play.

Delivered by the Parks team at Limerick City and County Council, the upgrade included improvements to both the junior and senior play areas and the installation of a wide range of new equipment and features.

These include an inclusive carousel; an inclusive trampoline; new play towers and slides in both the junior and senior play areas; a new swing frame with four swings, including an inclusive swing; a sensory play panel; a communication board; and an Irish Sign Language board and interactive games.

The investment also supports the wider vision for Abbeyfeale as a Limerick Town of the Future, enhancing community infrastructure, supporting active lifestyles and providing high-quality recreational amenities for local families.
