Limerick native Niamh Kelleher and her partner Jack Cakebread are thrilled to be selected as the caretakers of An Blascaod Mór’s accommodation and café for summer 2021.

The role was in high demand with people across Ireland applying for the role to experience this once in a lifetime job opportunity. With applications exceeding 45,000 which led Billy O’Connor and Alice Hayes of Great Blasket Islands tours and accommodation changing the application process for 2021, limiting the number of entries.

The caretaker role contains duties such as gardening, cleaning and meeting visitors who come off the boat.

Along with the many duties that the role contains, they will be expected to deal with no hot water and the changeable weather conditions.

The Kilfinane native Kelleher has not seen her boyfriend Jack since Christmas and is thrilled at the prospect of the island bringing them back together, who first encountered each other on a ski trip in France in 2019.

Speaking on the upcoming adventure on the island Ms Kelleher said, “oh my god this is made for us. We applied and we had no idea we would even get a reply. We were so excited when we got the interview and then we got it. We are so excited!”

Niamh and Jack met during the ski season in France in 2019 and, as Niamh describes, “we’ve been inseparable ever since.” Niamh hasn’t seen Jack since Christmas due to his residence permit which they are trying to organise so she is very excited about the island bringing them together.

All of us at I Love Limerick wish Niamh and Jack the very best on their island adventure!
