Nici LeGear has been announced as Saint Mary’s Cathedral’s first Artist in Residence
Saint Mary’s Cathedral announces Nici LeGear as its inaugural Artist in Residence under the theme ‘Echoes in Stone: Landscapes of Memory’

‘Echoes in Stone: Landscapes of Memory’ is the theme of Saint Mary’s Cathedral Artist in Residence, Nici LeGear’s project. It will run from mid-September until the end of October.
Speaking on Ms Nici LeGear’s residency, the Dean of Limerick, the Very Rev’d Niall Sloane, said, “We are delighted to welcome Nici to Saint Mary’s for this ‘first’ in the Cathedral’s long history. Art and beauty are so important to us, and we see this residency as another opportunity to engage art, people and the Cathedral.
“I wish to thank Ms Etain McCooey of Limerick and City & County Council, who helped us with this project, which is funded by the Arts Council and Limerick City and County Council, through the Limerick Arts Programme 2025”.
Using oil paint, Nici explores the relationship between landscape and human presence. Her recent work along the River Shannon in Limerick has led her to focus on how places hold memories, where human experience is felt rather than directly manifested.
‘Echoes in Stone: Landscapes of Memory’ Nici is creating three oil paintings exploring Saint Mary’s Cathedral as a living testament to community life, with Ancient Roots & Enduring Spirit, looking at the foundational elements and ancient landscape connections; Layers of Time & Resilience, looking at architectural details revealing centuries of history; and Contemporary Echoes & Community Life, which looks at the Cathedral as vibrant contemporary space.
Anyone can join Nici’s residency as she invites you to “share your cathedral stories” along with your paintings. Nici is collecting memories and stories from people connected to Saint Mary’s Cathedral to create a “Community Tapestry of Voices”. No experience is necessary – just bring your memories or connection to the place. Details of the free sessions will be announced soon.
