On Thursday, October 12th at 7 pm Northstar Family Support Project 9th Annual Service of Commemoration and Hope will get underway in the Augustinian Church on O’ Connell Street.

The theme for the service this year is “Hope is at the Heart of our Home”. This strongly reflects the hope that burns very steadily within the heart of the project’s new home Hopeful House in 28 John Street. This hope has always been an ever-present fixture within the Northstar, something which has grown from year to year.

Susan Williams, Chairperson of the Service of Commemoration and Hope Voluntary Committee, stated “even though the project has made a very significant move from one area to another, the work to engage and support communities continues, the essence of the project still remains, along with the hope carried to homes all over Limerick. The doors of Hopeful House are always open for those who need it. This is the message we wanted to share this year.”

During the service, a number of people will share their own personal stories around their experience of addiction within their families which is always a very thought-provoking and emotional part of the evening.

A selection of songs, poetry and drama will be performed at different stages which greatly embrace the meaning of the theme. They are carefully chosen each year as they can be very inspiring and motivating for those in attendance.

A centrepiece of the theme is the very impressive hand-crafted quilt which is tailor-made by the Service of Commemoration and Hope Working Group together with Martina Tuite. It is a very personalised piece of work and depicts Northstar’s new home in Hopeful House in a very colourful and creative way.

Patricia Whelan, Co-ordinator of Northstar Family Support Project said “this year our participants have taken an active role in the preparation of this event. It has been really encouraging to see such a shared passion and energy for our Service of Commemoration and Hope, along with a strong commitment to the task in hand. We are all looking forward to seeing all these plans come to life on the night”.

We would love you to join us on October 12th in remembering our loved ones lost through drug and alcohol misuse and to support the families left behind.
