Limerick City and County Council has announced that the extensive public realm works on O’Connell Street are nearing completion
The project has transformed key areas of the city, with an aim of enhancing the pedestrian experience and making the streets more accessible for all.
The works include widened footpaths, improved lighting and street furniture, upgraded crossings, and the planting of new trees and shrubs. These changes have not only improved the aesthetics of the city centre but have also made it more welcoming for visitors and residents alike.
The project is anticipated to be fully completed in May.
The majority of the works have been completed and the contractor is now in the final stages, coordinating with utility companies to finalise the completion of the remaining areas.
The highly-anticipated Riverfest Limerick festival is happening this weekend, and to make way for the Great Limerick Run and other festivities associated with the event, works will temporarily cease for the weekend.
The project completion date was delayed by unforeseen remedial works required to address localised pre-existing soft spots uncovered within junctions in advance of laying the final surface treatment. In addition, necessary repairs were required to rectify unforeseen damage to underground vault structures.
Vincent Murray, Director of Services, Economic Development and Enterprise at Limerick City and County Council said, “With the project nearing completion, we invite everyone to come and witness the transformed city centre, which now features improved pedestrian areas and greater accessibility. Riverfest Limerick provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the positive changes that have been made to date.”
