The iconic Old Quarter pub and restaurant in Limerick City is capturing the spirit of Christmas with its community-focused Angel Tree initiative, which is set to benefit local people and charities.

The idea, created by manager Catherine, has seen the bar staff and patrons do something meaningful that would benefit local people and charities within the community.

Catherine told I Love Limerick, “We wanted to do something that would benefit the community, the local people and everything else. So we did an angel tree. I put up tags, everybody came in, all our local customers, they took tags and went away and brought presents.”

In its first year, the initiative has received a lot of support and exceeded expectations, the reach has gone beyond the regular customers, Catehrine said, “ The support has been just totally unbelievable, like from people just coming in, taking tags and dropping stuff back. Not just regular customers. It was just everybody. It was out of this world!”

The initiative supports Adapt House, a charity that has worked for more than 50 years in Limerick city and county and the group hopes to support many charities in the future.

Catherine said, “ This is going to be the start of an annual charity event that we’re going to hopefully keep running for many years. It was to do something for the local charities, a part of our own community and our people. I wanted to help out by taking all these tags and bringing back presents to help out little kids and make it a little bit more special for them this Christmas.”

Simone Fox, Child & Youth Coordinator at Adapt House, spoke about the work carried out by the charity. She said, “ We provide a refuge and an outreach service to women and their children who experience domestic abuse. So this toy initiative is very important to us because it allows us to help women who have been financially, physically, and emotionally controlled by partners.

The Adapt worker said the support is “amazing” to provide a gift to someone who feels the pressure at this time of year. She added, “We get to smile. Unfortunately, the rest of you don’t see what we’re going to see when we hand over these toys because it makes life so much easier this time of the year. And it’s great that people think of us not just at Christmas, but throughout the year.”

The Angel Tree is intended to become an annual charity event at The Old Quarter. The initiative highlights the importance of keeping support local, with Limerick people helping Limerick organisations.

Speaking about the support, Catherine said, “ I never thought in a million years that it would get this response, so I thought our first year would be just a few presents here and there, but it really, really took off, and so many people were so generous.”
