Open House Limerick 2018

A festival marking the celebration of contemporary architecture, urban design and placemaking. Open House Limerick 2018 returns this weekend Friday, 19 October to Sunday, 21 October.

In its seventh year, Open House Limerick 2018 celebrates the theme of ‘Architecture is Community.’ It will explore how space is used by different groups, both as a place of congregation or through layered uses that are re-imagined through time.

The theme aims to open up a conversation around the value of architecture and its role in the community of Limerick.

The weekend events include unparalleled access to private buildings, dwellings, spaces and projects across the region, providing tours and talks with architects, historians, urban designers and occupants.

Open House was established in London in 1992 as an initiative to open up first-rate architecture to the public stirring an interest for urban built heritage.

Limerick has been a member of Open House Worldwide Family since 2012 alongside Helsinki, New York, Melbourne, Rome, Belfast, Dublin, and Cork.

This year the Open House includes a number of previously unseen venues as well as some firmly established favourites.

It would be interesting to further view newest additions to the city such as Tours of Gardens International (Hanging Gardens), Tours of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Tours of the A.K. Ilen boat, docked in Limerick Dock, to name a few.

The newest addition to the University of Limerick, a massive extension to the Glucksman Library will be one of the highlights of the Open House this year. The library now includes a range of world-class innovations in book storage and retrieval, digital research, accessibility, and ‘inspirational learning spaces’.  One stand out feature of the library is the ARC (Automated Reserve Collection) – a 10-meter high book vault and robotic crane, with the capacity to store 500,000 volumes in a space 1/9th of conventional shelving.

A presentation of work by Níall McLaughlin Architects, including the International Rugby Experience will also be a part of the highlights the Open House this year.
