Blustery breezes, sudden showers, howling hurricanes, the Opera Workshop weather is looking, well… a bit weathery as they release the ‘The Songs of the Meteorologist’ by Fiona Linnane.

Featuring soprano Roisin Walsh and saxophonist Markus Kraeber, these short opera films also star Shannon Rowing Club as the wonderful setting for ‘The Songs of the Meteorologist’ directed by Opera Workshop Artistic Director, Shirley Keane, with filmmakers Lucy Dawson and Shane Vaughan. The films were produced in association with Honest Arts production company.

The Songs of a Meteorologist were sparked into life by soprano Roisin Walsh who was confused by the naming system of storms and hurricanes. Leaving long phone messages to composer Fiona Linnane on the subject, Fiona’s response was Stormy Weather, which hasn’t helped Roisin’s understanding of the naming system.

‘Don’t Make Unnecessary Journeys’, is an operatic tribute to the incredible response on the internet to Teresa Mannion’s inspirational weather reporting videos!

The Songs of a Meteorologist by Fiona Linnane were first produced as part of Abandoned, a site-specific production of four short operas by Opera Workshop, at the Sailor’s Home, Limerick in May 2019 as part of the Limerick River Fest. The original production was supported by Limerick City & County Council Arts Office, Shannon Foynes Port Company Irish Chamber Orchestra, and University Concert Hall Limerick.

Filmed in October 2020 with the generous support of Shannon Rowing Club, Limerick, the films were produced by Opera Workshop in association with production partners Honest Arts. This project was made possible through funding from Creative Ireland and Limerick City and County Council Arts Office.

Limerick has had a love affair with opera over many, many years, and Opera Workshop reinvigorates old favourites and breaks new ground in opera performance for Limerick city and county and across the Midwest. Opera Workshop is always seeking to work with artists from all backgrounds interested in developing their practice through the art of opera. The Opera Workshop has a strong community and outreach ethos and welcomes opportunities to work with schools and community groups interested in developing projects that serve their needs while exploring a vibrant, joyous and beautiful art form.
