Limerick Writers’ Centre presents an “Introduction to Short Story and Poetry Workshop”, a one-day intensive workshop with poet and writer Órfhlaith Foyle

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, poet and writer Órfhlaith Foyle will host a one-day intensive “Introduction to Short Story and Poetry Workshop” with Limerick Writers’ Centre, at The People’s Museum of Limerick, Pery Square, Limerick.
The workshop runs in two sessions, with the poetry session from 10:00am-12:30pm, and a short story session 2:00pm-4:30pm, spaces are available to book for a fee of €80.00.
Leading the workshop is award winning County Galway-based poet and writer Órfhlaith Foyle, whose third collection “Three Houses in Rome” was published by Doire Press in September 2023. Foyle brings extensive experience as a dramatist and radio drama creator, having written and directed “May’s End” and “How I Murdered Lucrezia,” both of which received full BAI funding and premiered on Newstalk Radio.
This introductory workshop encourages participants to create their own poetry and short stories, exploring how these forms thrive on truth and imagination.
During the morning poetry session, participants will explore the basic ingredients of poetry—imagination, story, music, and structure.
The session covers tension, space, rhythm, rhyme, pace, imagery, and memory, as well as various poetic forms including narrative poems, prose poems, and free verse. It will include creative writing exercises and ten-minute poem composition; and works from poets including Marina Tsvetayeva, Michael Hartnett, Eleanor Hooker, Robert Lowell, and Pablo Neruda.
The afternoon short story session will build on the morning’s foundation. Participants will learn short story fundamentals icnluding character development, voice, setting, conflict, and dialogue, as well as opening techniques and narrative structure.
Also included in the workshop will be flash fiction and beginning stories in media res; and works from writers including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Kevin Barry, James Joyce, and Anton Chekov.
“This workshop aims to encourage participants to realize how intrinsic poetry and short stories are to life, and how each form thrives on the truth and imagination of the writer,” explains Foyle. “By the end of the day, each participant will have created their own poetry and begun their own short story.”
