A series of free art exhibitions and workshops are taking place across Limerick city all this week! The workshops are being hosted in the hope to help Limerick bid as the European City of Culture 2020.

Children and their parents are being invited by the 2020 bid team to “brainstorm, dream up ideas, draw, and create mixed-media woodblock prints in a fun, open and creative environment” at Ormston House this Friday and Saturday.

The Limerick 2020 bid has entered its second phase, with the capital of culture jury to visit Limerick on July 12. After the initial shortlisting, the feedback the team received was that it needed to focus on Limerick’s place in Europe and feed that into a mooted €35m budget programe.

As such, the workshops are part of an effort to glean from the public “their ideas on culture and identity from a European perspective and through these artistic processes understand how they would imagine Limerick’s future as a European city”.

Shelia Deegan of the Jury Visit had this to say about the workshops taking place this week, “When they are here, we would like to convey visually the ideas, concepts and dreams of Limerick and her citizens, from the output created by children and families in the print workshops.”

She added, “The visual celebration of Limerick will be part of the ways the jury will encounter Limerick and the ideas of future generations.”

The workshops are free but places are limited and advance booking is essential. The free workshops will take place in Ormston House this April 1 and 2, facilitated by leading print artists Emer Casey, Kate O’Shea and Eoin Barry.
