Over €70,000 has been raised for charities in memory of well-known Limerick auctioneer Danny Deady, whose passing last year deeply affected the Bruree community. Pictured above is the check presentation.

Over €70,000 has been raised for charities in memory of well-known Limerick auctioneer Danny Deady, whose passing last year deeply affected the Bruree community.

Danny, from Bruree, died last year in the care of Milford Care Centre. In his memory, a committee led by his wife Margaret organised a series of fundraising events to support both Milford Care Centre and the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation.

At a presentation held in The Railway Bar in Bruree, cheques of €35,500 were handed to each charity, bringing the total raised to €71,000.

The scale of the fundraising was highlighted by the fact that an additional €200,000 was also generated over the past year by the Rockhill and Bruree communities for the development of a ball wall and astroturf pitch.

Organisers said the chosen charities reflected the widespread impact of cancer on local families and the desire to support organisations that assist patients and their loved ones during difficult times.

Danny spent almost 50 years working with GVM, and his former colleagues, along with local farmers, strongly supported the fundraising efforts. A special calf sale at Kilmallock Mart saw over 66 calves donated, with many fetching above market value. Other farmers contributed cash instead of livestock, and mart staff also made donations.

At the event, Margaret Deady confirmed that €33,455 was raised on the day of the calf sale alone. The remaining funds came from a wide range of community initiatives including raffles, poker classics, cake sales, coffee mornings, table quizzes, and church and school collections.

Representatives from both beneficiary charities, including Liz Kelly of the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation and Mary O’Brien of Milford Care Centre, thanked the organisers and praised the exceptional community effort.

The fundraising drive formed part of an extraordinary year of activity in the parish. Following a Sports Capital Programme grant of nearly €200,000 for the community field development, locals organised major events including “A Night at the Oskars,” supported by around 120 volunteers, alongside scrap metal collections, quizzes, cycle events, tractor runs, and more.

In total, more than €200,000 was raised toward the sports facility, which is now complete and due to be officially opened later this year.

Organisers paid tribute to the strong spirit of Rockhill-Bruree and acknowledged the crucial support of sponsors, voluntary groups, local businesses, and individuals whose contributions made both projects possible.

Rockhill/Bruree Community Council commented saying” Last night marked the culmination of what has been a truly remarkable community fundraising effort as Bruree Rockhill & Friends “United Against Cancer” made presentations to both Milford Care Centre and the Mid Western Cancer Foundation.

It was wonderful to see such a lovely crowd in attendance for the occasion. The evening began with Margaret Deady giving a comprehensive overview of the fundraising campaign, outlining the success of each event and acknowledging the countless individuals, businesses, organisations and volunteers whose support made it all possible. Margaret also expressed sincere thanks to the many people who contributed their time, effort and generosity throughout the campaign.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the final fundraising total. An incredible €71,000 was raised through the collective efforts of our community. Together, Bruree, Rockhill and friends have made a real difference.”
