Paddy Flannery retired as the manager of Moyross Community Enterprise Centre (MCEC), bringing the curtain down on 31 years of service to the group and many more years as a local volunteer.

Staff, family, community representatives, members of An Garda Síochána, and local Government including Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, were in attendance to mark the end of an era for a much-loved and appreciated leader withing the Moyross community.

Paddy, originally from County Galway, and his wife Linda moved to Moyross in February 1975, settling into their new home in Cliona Park during an exciting period for the residents and almost five decades later they remain an integral part of the local community.

At the time of their arrival, Moyross’s eight housing estates, built in the mid-1970s, faced significant challenges, including the lack of essential services such as schools, churches, supermarkets, reliable public transport, a library, and employment opportunities. Despite these obstacles, the community had a spark and spirit recognised by none more than Paddy who embodies the pride of the Moyross community.

At the special retirement event, MCEC chairperson Tony Lynch said, “Throughout the years, Moyross Community Enterprise Centre, under Paddy’s guidance, maintained a steady focus on doing what was best for Moyross. Regeneration proceeded, the potential for greater employment opportunities locally has improved, and stigmatisation of the area has decreased. It is a remarkable turnaround and Paddy has contributed to making Moyross a better place today.”

Paddy treated the day like any other, spending his last day on the job. He received presentations from various groups that his work had supported over the years, including from Moyross Youth Academy, and from Changing Ireland which is based in the community centre.

As the community wishes Paddy the best of luck in his retirement, the send-off he received from all of those involved shows the impact he has had on his local community over the years, and the inspiration he has given his colleagues and neighbours for the future of Moyross.

Richard Lynch of I Love Limerick wishes Paddy all the best in his retirement, saying, “The love Paddy shares for his community is inspirational and truly exemplifies the work we strive to promote with ilovelimerick.com, we wish him a happy retirement!”
