16/05/2024 pictured at 2024 UL Access Schools Award Ceremony. The Access Office proudly hosted another successful Access Schools Award Ceremony on Thursday 16 th May in the Kemmy Business School in UL. There was huge excitement and the atmosphere was vibrant with the event drawing 280 second level pupils and parents/ guardians. There were seven partner schools who participated in two pre-entry programmes Look to the Future and Broadening Horizons which the Access Office facilitates. The ceremony recognises and celebrates the excellent participation of these students who participate in both programmes. The awards were presented by Associate Vice President Student Engagement Dr. Ronni Greenwood and a highlight of the day was the motivational speech addressed by one of our own UL students and Access Mentor, Vitali Kobin. Vitali shared his unique student experience, leaving a sincere impact on the second level students receiving their awards. His speech inspired the pupils to believe in their potential and raised their aspirations at the possibility of coming to University. The Access Schools Award Ceremony is a testament to UL’s commitment to Access and Widening Participation and it showcased the depth of work by the partner schools and the Access Office. A new road safety initiative led by University of Limerick and An Garda Siochana has seen students highlight the dangers of drug driving. More than 800 students across Ireland have engaged in a potentially lifesaving project as part of the Road Safety Reimagined initiative. Thirty percent of people killed on Irish roads in the first three months of the year were aged between 16 and 25, according to the Road Safety Authority. With drink driving, drug driving and speeding continuing to be some of the primary causes of serious collisions on Irish roads, students from UL, South East Technological University, and Maynooth University were tasked with reimagining road safety through contemporary marketing concepts and developing solutions to positively affect driving behaviour. The overall winning concept by students from Maynooth University, ‘Chances of you getting home safe aren’t as high as you are’, uses an image of a dice to stress the unpredictability of drug driving.
