Students ‘Shoot the Breeze’ as a sustainable new world from west coast wind energy is set out in Shannon Foynes Port competition Innovation, team-work and hard work of students stand out as eyes are wide opened to Shannon Estuary and west coast wind potential The future is in safe hands and very much about sustainability, Shannon Foynes Port Chief Executive Pat Keating stated as he applauded students from across the Shannon Estuary for their vision for the future at the 4 th Compass schools competition final. Hosted at the newly renovated Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum at the weekend, the competition, themed ‘Shooting the Breeze’, saw five schools shortlisted for the grand final set out their vision for a future entirely powered from renewable energy by harvesting our infinite wind supply off the west coast through floating wind energy. It follows the completion of the section of the Scheme from the Ballinacurra Road junction to the Roxboro Roundabout, after the section from Roxboro to the Kilmallock Roundabout was finished in 2023. The works have included the installation of cycle lane separators along the route, junction tightening, footpath widening, accessibility improvements, raised tables and new pedestrian crossing points at the Roxboro Roundabout to improve safety. Safe Routes To School infrastructure has also been provided at Our Lady of Lourdes NS, the Midwest School for the Deaf and Our Lady Queen of Peace NS, Janesboro under the Scheme, along with minor improvements outside Le Cheile NS and Gaelscoil Sheoirse Clancy. REPRO FREE Another new chapter is set to be written for Limerick’s most storied building, King John’s Castle, with international design consultants appointed to prepare a Masterplan that will guide the transformation of the iconic 13th century castle into a world-class visitor attraction. A multi-disciplinary Design Team headed up by international design practice Galmstrup Architects has been appointed to create a roadmap for maximising the potential of one of Ireland’s foremost cultural and heritage sites. The King John’s Castle Masterplan, which is funded by Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, is the latest initiative by the wholly owned Limerick City and County Council subsidiary, Discover Limerick Development Activity Company (DAC), which was launched two years ago by the local authority to maximise key tourism attractions and grow visitor numbers in the county. The consultants have been appointed following a public procurement competition conducted through the course of 2023. The masterplan will be expected to identify opportunity for investment in an exciting and innovative visitor offering for the Castle that takes a holistic approach to the city-wide and site-wide components of the visitor experience, increasing the value of the castle as a visitor attraction that delivers sustainable socio-economic benefits for the city and region.
