Paint it Pink fundraising event to raise funds for breast cancer awareness

A ‘Paint it Pink’ fundraising event was held this Sunday in The Training Room fitness studio to raise funds for breast cancer awareness, raising an impressive €641, with more estimated to be gathered by the end of the month.

Seven skilled Limerick beauticians donated their time to paint people’s nails pink, offering a variety of shades of pink, charging €10 per adult and €5 per child.

Entertainment for children was provided, with free pace-painting and a candy floss machine on the day.

Barbara O’Dowd, owner of Beauty Brought 2 You, a mobile beauty therapy service, hoped that the event has resonated with people because “everyone is affected by cancer in some way.

“I have two aunts who have had breast cancer and a father who had prostate cancer. We all know someone who has suffered from some form of cancer.

“I spotted a couple of posters about October being paint it pink month, and I thought ‘wouldn’t it be a good idea to actually paint something pink, using our skills?’,” she said.

The Limerick beautician has kick-started her fundraising campaign personally, donating proceeds of earnings to the Irish Cancer Society.

“I’m running my own offer for October. For any woman who gets her nails done, whether painted, gel or shellac, I am donating €2 from their treatment to breast cancer awareness.”

The event has seen support from the community, with Sweet Treats, a candy buffet company, donating the candy floss machine and sugar, and Eric Johnson, donating the venue.

Though overlapping with the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup, the event was a chance for ladies to take a break from the sport, with a rush during match-time.

With the possibility of making the day an annual event, Ms O’Dowd said: “It’s a possibility. It is something I would definitely be interested in.”
