Parkinson’s Midwest is a charity supporting people with Parkinson’s, their carers, and families. Parkinsons Awareness Week 2015 will run from 6th to 11th April 2015 and as part of this the Mid-West Branch of the Parkinson’s Association will hold a Fundraising Coffee Morning at Bobby Byrne’s Wolfe Tone Bar, O’Connell Avenue, Limerick, on Thursday 9th April next from 10.00am to 12 noon. This is part of their continuous and ongoing efforts to raise much needed funding as they do not receive any State support.

There are approximately 450 people in the Mid-West who suffer with Parkinson’s disease. The Mid – West Branch is run by voluntary effort so all monies raised are used for the provision of services for patients.

The services include information meetings addressed by Guest Speakers with specialist knowledge of Parkinson’s disease; Physical Therapy, Hydrotherapy and Speech Therapy through the medium of signing.

The support of the Public would be greatly appreciated on the 9th April at Bobby’s. All are welcome.

In other Parkinsons Midwest news, last year on Sunday April 5th 2014 a group of seven health care providers from the University Hospital Limerick set off from Shannon Airport to participate in a unique venture in London.

The Mid-West branch of the  Parkinson’s Association of Ireland in conjunction with the University Hospital Limerick had arranged that the seven undertake advanced training in the field of Parkinson’s Disease.

The group consisted of a Neuro-physiotherapist, a Pharmacist, a Nurse from each of the male and female medical wards, a Nurse specialising in orthopaedic care and two Nurses from the Acute Stroke Unit.

The background to this training originates in the development of neurological services at the hospital.  Currently work is ongoing in the building of a new state of the art Acute Stroke Unit incorporating a dedicated suite to care for the patient with Parkinson’s Disease. This could only have been made possible through the dedication and hard work of the Mid-West Branch to push for advanced services for Parkinson’s disease patients in the region.

A special thanks has to go to Ms Una Anderson Ryan and Mr Eddie Butler of the Mid-West branch of the  Parkinson’s  Association of Ireland. Without their inspiration, foresight and perseverance none of this would have happened.
