Thousands of people attended the ‘Light up Limerick’ switching on ceremony organised by Limerick City and County Council which took place at 6 pm on O’Connell Street with entertainment starting from 4.30pm.

The highlight was the switching on of the lights by Skye, Marshall and Chase from the popular children’s TV show PAW Patrol who took time out from their heroic adventures to help Mayor Stephen Keary, Limerick Rose, Kayleigh Maher and Santa Claus kickstart the festive season in Limerick, followed by a display of Fireworks.

Prior to that, the crowds was entertained by street performers and special guests including soprano Sinéad O’Brien, tenor Derek Moloney, the Unity Gospel Choir and musician Jason Hennessy ahead of the biggest cheer of the weekend in the city when the spectacular lights display switched on.

PAW Patrol is a children’s animated show which airs on Nickelodeon. A research study, commissioned by Sky in March 2016, reported that 16 percent of surveyed British and Irish children named PAW Patrol as their favourite program.

The Christmas programme in Limerick is being coordinated by Limerick City and County Council Arts Office and the Office of Marketing and Communications with support from Grooveyard Event Management and GoldieFish events.
