Island Connect is a collaborative programme between five performing arts organisations that create art on various islands in Europe. They work with artists located on European islands of different countries. The countries are united by creativity and performing arts.

A photographic exploration programme, Island Connect is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Limerick City & County Council, and is co-funded by the EU’s Creative European Programme. The objective is to provide the artists with a much-needed space for research and free experimentation.

Limerick-based Irish Aerial Creation Centre (IACC) is partnered with Island Connect. They hosted photographer Dea Botica from Croatia in 2021 as part of the project. IACC has been given the honour of partnering with the Limerick City Gallery of Art to present Dea Botica’s work in a photographic art exhibition this month, running until August 26.

Dea Botica was born in 1995 on the island of Korĉula in Croatia and has a master’s degree in photography. Her photographs were exhibited in several groups and solo exhibitions in Croatia and abroad.

Dea began a month-long trip in 2021 to the islands of Europe as part of the Island Connect project. The first stop of the research work was Inishmaan and Inisheer, two of the three Aran Islands.

“Determined by my own growing up on the island Korĉula, I record in the medium of photography, fragments of island life that I know and that I get to know in new environments,” Dea said of her work, which is marked by issues of insularity and identity.

The Island Connect work is being presented by the Limerick City Gallery of Art in a beautifully laid out photographic art exhibition.

This project is supported by Arts Council Ireland, Limerick Arts Office, Creative Europe, Office for NGOs of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, Kultura Nova Foundation, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, Creative Europe and Island Connect.

So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
