Rape Crisis Midwest Walk A Mile in Her Shoes
This past Saturday at The Pavilion, UL I had the honour of being the Master of Ceremonies at Limerick’s first Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in aid of Rape Crisis Midwest. As the title would suggest men walked a mile in women’s high heel shoes in order to raise awareness around the topic of sexual violence and Rape Crisis Midwest are a support service for both male and female survivors. The objective of the event, was to hopefully positively engage men in the discussion around sexual violence, using the shoes as a metaphor for the men wearing them to experience what it feels like to be in a women’s shoes. The Limerick Fire and Rescue Service were there on the day showing their support by taking part in the walk in their full work attire and heels. The day also provided fun for all the family, with great entertainment including fire breathers, some great music, face painters for the kids, a bake sale and a raffle with some great prizes. Overall the day was a great success raising some must needed funds for the centre but most importantly raising awareness and opening up the topic of sexual violence amongst more people.
