This is the third year in a row that Pieta House will be running a 100 cycle which will mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday, September 10.

The Pieta 100 cycle first started in Limerick and will be taking place in six locations across the country this year.

The starting point for the Pieta 100 cycle 2017 In Limerick IS Mungret GAA club.

There is a local Pieta house centre in Mungret and chief executive of Pieta House Brian Higgins has called on people to join in, and raise money for Pieta House.

He said: “In the same way that someone out on a cycle can put a supportive hand on your back to help push you up a hill, that’s really the job of Pieta house too.”

He also added, “I know just how much commitment and effort goes into a big cycle. There is a personal achievement that comes out of it, there is the achievement of meeting new people and having a good day’s craic. There is also the achievement of having raised money to keep our services free for anyone in our community who needs them”.

Over 700 cyclists took part in the first ever Pieta 100 National Cycle Weekend in Limerick in 2015 with many more coming out to show their support along the route. While raising awareness of the issues of suicide and self-harm, the cycle also raised much-needed funds for the Pieta House service. Cycles also took place in Galway, Cork and Dublin and are set to become part of the Pieta House fundraising calendar.

Pieta House, Ardaulin, Mungret, Limerick, a suicide and self-harm crisis centre, was founded in 2006. With nine centres throughout Ireland, Pieta House provides a professional one-to-one therapeutic service for those who are experiencing suicidal ideation or engaging in self-harm. A doctor’s referral or a psychiatric report is not required and the service is completely free of charge. To date, Pieta House has supported more than 17,000 people, with more than 5,000 of those seeking help in 2014.

Places on the Pieta 100 cycle 2017 are limited to 500 riders so people who want to take part are being advised to sign up as soon as possible.

There will be two cycles taking place for the Pieta 100 cycle 2017, a 53km circuit, and a more challenging 100km route.
