Through events, activities and planning visits, it gives people an opportunity to explore planning and learn about the importance of planning in day to day life.

Speaking at the photo launch of Planning Week in Thomond Park Limerick, Deirdre Fallon, President of the Irish Planning Institute said: “Planning is about taking the longer term perspective, to think of the future and take the time to bring that future to life for the good of a place and all of its people.”

“It is about making places better so that people can have somewhere to live, work, shop, watch rugby and other sports, enjoy their leisure time and experience nature whether you live in a rural area, town or a city.”

“The work planners do makes a big difference in people’s lives. A new Plan called Ireland 2040 our Plan also known as the National Planning Framework is being finalised by the government. Ireland in 2040 will look and feel completely different to Ireland in 2017.”

She added: “Our country and citizens will have to cope with enormous changes in social, economic, cultural and environmental terms. Planners help plan for this future and for the future in whatever country they chose to work in.”

During Planning Week, the Institute is encouraging students to consider a career in planning. Students through their teachers can arrange for a visit from a qualified Planner to their class to explore the world of planning.

Planning Week 2018 is being launched in Thomond Park, an iconic landmark in Limerick City and the home of Munster rugby.  The stadium was redeveloped in 2008 by a design team which included planning consultants.

The design team worked with planners in the local authority to deliver a unique stadium with a unique atmosphere for supporters and players. In August 2013 Thomond Park was awarded the title of ‘Best Rugby Stadium in the World’ following a vote by Rugby supporters across the globe.

Planning & Planners can make a difference and Planning Week is an opportunity to learn why. Founded in 1975, the Irish Planning Institute is the all-island professional body representing professional planners engaged in physical, spatial and environmental planning in Ireland and Irish planners practicing overseas.
