The President of Italy, Mr. Sergio Mattarella touched down at Shannon Airport on Sunday, May 19
The President of the Italian Republic, Mr. Sergio Mattarella touched down at Shannon Airport on Sunday, May 19 and was greeted by Mary Considine, CEO of The Shannon Airport Group.
Mr Mattarella is the Italian Republic’s 12th President, and also the longest serving having been elected to the position in 2015 and being re-elected in January 2022 having previously ruled out a second term.
The President, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Laura Mattarella, arrived in Shannon ahead of a short visit to Ireland which included a dinner hosted by Uachtarán na hÉireann, President Michael D. Higgins.
President Mattarella delivered a speech at the dinner which centred around the importance of the European Union, as well as Ireland’s role and benefits within it, noting Ireland is “perhaps the most successful example of life in the European Union”.
Highlighting the upcoming European Electoins, The Italian Republic President said Ireland is a great example for those who “still hesitate to recognize the benefits that individual countries derive from belonging to the European Union”.
Mr. Paul Kavanagh, Chief of Protocol at the Department of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Ruggero Corrias, the Ambassador of Italy to Ireland, the Ambassador’s wife, Ms. Vania Lorenzo and Mary Considine, CEO of The Shannon Airport Group welcomed the President to Ireland.
President Mattarella is the longest-serving president in the history of the Italian Republic, having been first elected in 2015.
