Principal’s Fundraiser results in €2500 for Mid West Spina Bifida Association

Following a successful fundraiser as president of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals in 2014, Padraig Flanagan, the principal of Limerick secondary school Castletroy College, recently made a donation of €2,500 to the Mid-West Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association. 

‘We raised the money running a charity auction and raffle at the annual dinner of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals organisation. I then made the decision to donate the proceeds to Mid-West Spina Bifida Association as it is a cause that is close to my heart,” said Padraig Flanagan, when handing over the cheque for the donation recently.

Michelle Daly Hayes, Development Manager of the charity said, “We at the Mid-West Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association were delighted to receive the news that this donation was coming from National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals. We appreciate Padraig, thinking of us and donating such a significant amount. We are only 40% funded by the HSE so we are hoping this event will help us to carry on providing our vital services for our members. We are currently building new facilities for our members to provide services.”

The Mid West Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association works with 106 families with members who have Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus in Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. The charity has been in existence since 1982 and provides support, information, physiotherapy, counselling, advocacy and advice to members, their parents and carers and to expand and upgrade services for people living with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus in order to promote individual choice, control and quality of life. Spina Bifida is a common condition affecting one in every thousand children in Ireland. Ireland has one of the highest incidences of Spina Bifida births in the world and causes incomplete development of the spinal cord. The effects of the condition vary from profound physical and intellectual disability to milder disabilities.
