Proclamation Day 2016 at University limerick saw Prof Don Barry, President UL, raising the national tri-colour. In accordance with the guidance of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme, University Limerick held a flag-raising ceremony yesterday at noon followed by a reading of the Proclamation to mark the occasion. Some members of UL’s traditional music group Cruinniú played Amhrán na bhFiann as part of this event.
Proclamation Day is the day when every educational institution across the country has been invited to focus on the significance of the 1916 Proclamation of the Republic. It is also a day when everyone is encouraged to dedicate some time to Centenary-related activities to mark the 1916 Centenary. This year marks the 100 anniversary of the 1916 Rising, throughout the year many special events will be held to mark this hugely important event in Irish history.
By March all primary and post primary schools received National Flags and copies of the original Proclamation to incorporate into Proclamation Day 2016 activities. To mark the occasion many schools and colleges had performances including historical or contemporary music, poetry readings and short dramas acted out by the students all related to the proclamation . University Limerick marked the occasion by reading the proclamation, the ceremony was held outside the White House and was attended by students, staff and members of the public. A major focus of the day was the reading of the Proclamation. This event is a key part of Ireland’s 2016 Commemorations for the Centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.
