Since March of this year, Limerick artists from all disciplines have been meeting regularly to discuss and review artistic development in the city.  Professional Limerick Artists Network (PLAN) is the first network of its kind in Ireland, comprising professional practitioners from all artistic disciplines.  PLAN’s mission is to act as a representative body for artists in Limerick, operating as a forum and a lobby group, locally and nationally, on issues of common concern relating to the practice, management and development of the arts in Limerick. So far the network has produced two documents; the first, An Assessment of the Current Needs of Artists working in Limerick and the second, A Response to Limerick 2030, an Economic and Spatial Plan for Limerick.  Both of these documents are available to view on www.prolan.ie.  Both documents emphasise the need for ongoing dialogue with Limerick City and County Councils and with the Arts Council. Already, PLAN has played a key role in the creation of The Limerick Arts Encounter, an innovative artistic programme, currently under way in various locations throughout the city. Dr. John Greenwood, Chairman of PLAN tells me, “Limerick is a great City to live in, this is something that PLAN members were very aware of before they had their first meeting and remains a cornerstone of all our aims and objectives. It is really about rolling up our sleeves in our sector and seeing how new working relationships can benefit and strive towards a ‘best practice’ initiative in the arts. Given our designation as City of Culture next year, the time is right for getting our house in order, so that a real and working legacy that achieves ‘all partner engagement’ for an arts sector furthers even international standards.”

Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
