Professor Dónal Palcic, Professor of Economics at UL’s Kemmy Business School, described the appointment as “a great honour” and will subsequently go on to take up the role of President of the IEA in 2028.

The objective of the Irish Economic Association is to contribute to the development and application of economics in Ireland, improve communication between economists in Ireland, and sponsor co-operation between the Irish and the international economics community.

Professor Palcic, whose research expertise lies in public sector economics, has been a board member of the IEA since 2020 and brought the annual IEA conference to Limerick back in 2022.

Currently teaching economics in UL, Professor Palcic has over 20 years’ lecturing experience and has served three terms as Assistant Dean International for the Kemmy Business School (2016 to 2025). His notable international posts include Visiting Research Fellow at Cornell University, USA and Visiting Professor at Grenoble École de Management (France), Audencia Business School in Nantes, and École de Management Strasbourg.

Professor Palcic is the first UL faculty member to be appointed to the position of Vice President of the IEA, and he will begin his term in May of this year.

“It’s a great honour to be elected as Vice President of the Irish Economic Association for a two-year period prior to taking over as president in 2028,” said Professor Palcic.

“The IEA is 40 years old this year and is the main national body for economists in Ireland. The association has done a great job of promoting both academic and policy-oriented economic research in Ireland, and I look forward to contributing to the growth and development of the organisation in the coming years.”

Professor Finbarr Murphy, Executive Dean of the Kemmy Business School, paid tribute to Professor Palcic’s “outstanding scholarship and commitment to the economics community”.

“[Professor Palcic’s] appointment as Vice President of the Irish Economic Association is a well-deserved recognition of his hard work and considerable contributions to economics research and education,” said Professor Murphy.

“Dónal’s colleagues and I at the Kemmy Business School are very proud to see him take on this important role and know the Association will be positively impacted by his leadership, research and collaborations in Ireland and internationally.”
