Kilcornan Athletic Football Club have organised a fundraiser to raise money for the staff at the University Hospital Limerick, who are working tirelessly in the fight against Covid-19. The fundraiser, ‘Quarantash for UHL’, is asking for your support, as members of Kilcornan AFC will be ditching their razors and growing moustaches over the coming weeks, during this period of isolation. All money raised will go towards food and equipment for the UHL staff.

The University Hospital Limerick has been Limerick’s regional hospital since 1955, serving a population of over 473,000 people in the Midwest region. It is the hub for the three smaller local hospitals; Ennis Hospital, Nenagh Hospital and St John’s Hospital, which manage the majority of their local population through their medical assessment units and inpatient beds. The UHL group employs over 4000 members of staff, who are all working relentless hours on the frontline, as the number of Coronavirus cases increases each day, and so too the number of critical patients.

In a statement issued by UHL as the amount of Covid-19 cases in Ireland began to increase, they said, “Staff at UL Hospitals Group and in HSE Community Healthcare have been preparing for positive cases of COVID-19 for a number of weeks and are closely following the plans established by the HSE and the Department of Health and in line with the WHO and ECDC guidance.”

Kilcornan AFC have said that the aim of their fundraiser is not only to support the UHL workers who are putting themselves at risk everyday as they tend to Covid-19 patients, but also to spread positivity to everyone who is self-isolating at the moment. Many people’s mental health may be suffering during this time, with constant anxiety surrounding the situation, as well as the lack of socialising and confinement to our homes.

But this fundraiser will hopefully give people something positive and entertaining to see on their social media timelines, away from the constant influx of breaking news and rising numbers surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking about the fundraiser, Chairman of Kilcornan AFC, James O’Shaughnessy, said, “We, as a club, wanted to both help and contribute in some way to the frontline staff of the UHL that are working so hard to protect us, our families and our friends at this time. We hope this fundraiser will keep people going, by providing people with an escape from everything that is going on in Ireland and the world at the moment by giving them something to smile at. To donate through the Go Fund Me ‘Quarantash for UHL’ page or grow a ‘quarantash’ of your own and join the cause.”
