She loves supermarkets, they’re one of her happy places. Rows and aisles filled with endless choices around food and drinks. These are the places where most of us do our daily or weekly shop so, therefore, the place where most of us make our decision around our own and our family’s nutrition. They’re often associated with large sections of foods that are unhealthy, high in calories and other bad guys but more and more these days also packed with healthier options.

Rachel Mescall Fitzpatrick

Rachels Supermarket Super Foods is going to post pictures and put up information about “healthier” (health being subjective) options found in the aisles of your favourite supermarket. Rachel regularly runs classes in healthy eating, where she brings community groups to supermarkets and shows them the healthier option and this adventure is an extension of these classes.

Currently doing a Post Grad in Health Promotion in NUI, Galway Rachel wants to debunk the myth that all healthy foods are expensive or need to be and promises to find the more cost-effective still healthy version in your favourite supermarket.

Rachel is also a mom so can draw on loads of experience there and she wants to make health accessible for all so will look for any money savers that pop up in stores regularly and signpost you to better more reasonably priced healthier options.

Rachel said, “I wanted to start the page to give simple advice on healthy food. I also wanted to show people that healthy foods don’t have to cost the earth and that supermarkets now have healthy choices you just need to know which food to choose from. It’s about making small changes somewhere in your diet. It’s not about perfection. A tip would be looking at the food label, generally, the food with the least ingredients is better for us.
