Canoeing Ireland’s charity event of 2020 and 2021, the annual Rape Crisis Midwest Paddle returns on Saturday, August 6 for the seventh year in a row.

The paddle, held in conjunction with Canoeing Ireland, Kayaking Academy and various other charity partners, begins at Shannon Rowing Club in Annacotty and takes a 10k trip along the River Shannon to Limerick City.

Rape Crisis Midwest, formally known as Limerick Rape Crisis Centre was founded in 1980 by a group of women and men who were concerned about the lack of services for survivors of rape and sexual abuse.

Since then, they have worked to provide comprehensive information, professional support, and a quality counselling service for survivors of sexual abuse and violence throughout the Midwest region.

Their vision is of a society where the rights of all adults and children to live a life free from all forms of sexual violence are upheld. They also aim to raise awareness, not only for the support of victims but for sexual consent and the prevention of abuse and violence.

“The annual Rape Crisis Midwest 10k Paddle has become a regular fixture on our events calendar every year. It attracts visitors from not only the Midwest, but across the country,” Verena Tarpey of Rape Crisis Midwest said.

“We are also delighted to partner with various organisations in Limerick, which has resulted in the event becoming very much a community effort. Thanks to Limerick Suicide Watch, Limerick Sports Partnership, Limerick 2030, St Mary’s Aid, Our Lady of Lourdes Community Centre, Our Next Adventure and Kilfinane Outdoor Education Centre.”
