70 Limerick businesses now signed up for Refill.ie initiative

Seventy Limerick city businesses have now signed up for the Refill.ie initiative with more expected to join in the coming months. Limerick City and County Council is supporting the major voluntary environmental project, which aims to make Ireland a tap water refilling country. The aim of Refill.ie is to prevent plastic waste by reducing the amount of single-use drinking water plastic bottles we consume in Ireland.

The initiative is aimed at tackling the number of plastic bottles ending up as litter on our streets, waterways, and seas.  It encourages the public to refill their reusable bottles for free from a commercial location. Since its launch 70 environmentally conscious businesses in Limerick have signed up for Refill.ie, with the number growing daily.

The project is also selling organic sports water bottles: sugar cane and stainless steel bottles.

Adam Teskey, Deputy Mayor of the City and County of Limerick commended Limerick City businesses for supporting the project saying “I’m delighted with the response of Limerick City Businesses to the Refill.ie initiative. This will help prevent plastic bottles from ending up as litter on our streets, waterways, and seas. It is a win-win for all involved.”  

Sinead McDonnell, Environmental Awareness Officer, for Limerick City and County Council added “Our Refill team is delighted with the response to this waste-reducing campaign. This project will feature in the 2020 Limerick City Tidy Towns Application and helps Limerick’s profile as European Green Leaf City for 2020.” 

The Refill.ie project is a voluntary scheme that allows the business to show their commitment to preventing single-use plastics. By being on the “tap map”, Limerick businesses of all kinds are agreeing to refill water bottles with tap water. Sinead McDonnell encourages all businesses in towns and villages with Tidy Towns that have not signed up to do it either by contacting Refill.ie directly or by contacting Limerick City and County Council by phone on 061 557110 or 061 557108.

Refill.ie have provided a Tap Map to find either participating local business pledging to give free, no quibble tap water refills in your reusable water bottle or local public mains water tap locations.
