400 new jobs are on their way to Limerick following the announcement by pharmaceutical company Regeneron that it is expanding its operations in its manufacturing plant in Limerick.

The US company is maximising capacity at its New York manufacturing facility for its Covid-19 treatment. The new jobs in Limerick will support the production of Regeneron’s existing medicines.

This major announcement was attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tanaiste Leo Varadkar. The Taoiseach has said the new jobs were a further vote of confidence in the skills and talent of the workforce and would be a welcome boost to the economy.

The roles will be full-time high-end specialist jobs in commercial manufacturing process sciences, quality assurance, and control, supply change and support functions for scientists, chemists, and technicians.

This is the biggest jobs announcement in the region since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and will add to the existing 1,000 staff at its industrial operations and product supply campus in Limerick.

“As this pandemic hit, we needed to quickly change how we do things and where we make our products. In order to make space in our New York facilities to accommodate our Covid-19 efforts, we needed to ramp-up capacity here in Limerick,” said Dan Van Plew, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Industrial Operations and Product Supply (IOPS) at Regeneron.

Having invested more than 1 billion in Ireland since 2014, Regeneron says the creation of these new jobs is part of the firm’s long-term commitment to Limerick.  The IOPS campus at Raheen Business park has more than 1,000 employees, more than 300 contingent workers, and almost 500 construction personnel working on site. It is the Largest-scale bulk biologics production facility in Ireland.

The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr Michael Collins has welcomed the announcement that Regeneron is to create 400 jobs at its base in Raheen in Limerick, saying, “Regeneron’s decision to invest in Limerick is yet another vote of confidence in the employees already working for the company and for the Limerick city region as a whole. 

“Since Regeneron opened it’s Industrial Operations and Product Supply (IOPS) facility in Raheen in 2015, the company has been continuously growing with additional capacity being built and now has a highly-skilled workforce of 1,000. This will be strengthened now with today’s announcement. 


“Today’s announcement is a huge commitment by Regeneron in Limerick and will be a massive boost to the economy as we begin to work our way through the impact of Covid-19.” 

“Indeed, Regeneron is at the forefront in working to find a vaccine for Covid-19 and Limerick will play its part in the process. “

Vincent Murray, Director of Economic Development, Limerick City and County Council added, “This investment by Regeneron is testament to the hard work and commitment of staff in Limerick since the operations got underway in 2015. The growth of Regeneron in Limerick highlights the potential that FDI companies have when they locate here. 

“We have the edge over other regions as we embrace collaboration and work together as a unit to make Limerick a more attractive place for businesses to invest. 

“The announcement showcases how Limerick can work together to make the region more attractive for foreign direct investment.”
