Limerick City and County Council has announced the official opening of the Reilig Mhuire Burial Ground Extension in Askeaton, Co. Limerick.

The extension project, tendered in 2023 and delivered by DR Construction Ltd, represents a significant investment of €107,751.11 in local community infrastructure funded by the Council’s own resources. The works commenced in late 2023 and have delivered a high-quality expansion to the existing burial ground, covering 0.811 hectares. The development included site clearance, construction of footpaths, headstone foundation beams, and other essential works.

The burial ground is being developed on a phased basis, with Phase 1 providing 292 burial plots and 41 ashes plots. Once fully developed, the extension will have the capacity for 1,300 grave spaces and 164 ashes plots.

The official blessing of the burial ground was performed jointly by Fr. John Mockler (Roman Catholic Church) and Rev. Kevin O’ Brien (Church of Ireland) reflecting the inclusive nature of the facility.

Deputising for the Mayor Limerick at the official opening, Cllr Tommy Hartigan commented, “This development provides a vital community service for Askeaton and the surrounding area. By planning ahead, we are ensuring families have access to dignified burial space for generations to come. I would like to acknowledge the excellent work carried out by DR Construction and the efforts of Limerick City and County Council in making this possible.”

Director of Environment, Climate Action and Shared Services, Limerick City and County Council, Kieran Lehane, added, “This extension was carefully designed and delivered to a high standard. The phased approach allows us to balance capacity with long-term planning, while the inclusion of ashes burial plots reflects the growing preference among families for cremation while ensuring loved ones have a dignified and peaceful place of rest.”
