Limerick people urged to show their support at the Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life Limerick on September 7, 2024
Limerick people are being invited to show their support for those affected by cancer at the Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life Limerick, which takes place for the first time at Croagh GAA Club, Croagh, Co Limerick on September 7, 2024.
Relay for Life Limerick, in aid of The Irish Cancer Society, is a 24-hour event, bringing the community together to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have been lost to cancer. Participants team up and take turns to walk through the day and night, with someone always on the move during the 24-hour period.
The uplifting occasion features music and entertainment throughout and is a great family-friendly event for all. A Candle of Hope ceremony also takes place, where hundreds of candle bags, personalised with messages of remembrance and hope are lit during a moving ceremony.
The event begins at 1pm on September 7, running until the next day.
Nicola Hogan from Rathkeale Co. Limerick said seeing first-hand the challenges people face following their diagnosis inspired her to get involved with the Irish Cancer Society Relay For Life to “support a cause that had touched my own life so dramatically”.
Nicola said, “In March 2021, we lost my brother’s fiancé to cancer. I saw first-hand the challenges she faced, from treatments to the emotional toll of a diagnosis. I also saw the impact losing her had on loved ones, and the support that is needed.
“I first got involved in the Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life, because I wanted to support a cause that had touched my own life so dramatically.
Monies raised for Relay for Life Limerick enable The Irish Cancer Society to provide vital services to people in the area, funding groundbreaking cancer research, trials and crucial free support services for people affected by cancer throughout Ireland.
€30 can help provide transport for a patient to and from their chemotherapy treatment using the Irish Cancer Society’s Volunteer Driver Service. €50 can help provide vital clinical equipment for an Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse. €60 will cover the cost of a counselling session to help a person cope with a cancer diagnosis in their life. €455 will cover the cost of one night of Night Nursing, providing end-of-life care to a patient in their own home.
In 2023, generous support from the public provided more than 510 free lifts to bring Limerick-based cancer patients to their treatment; over 180 free supportive conversations with people in Limerick through the Support Line & Daffodil Centres; and over 625 nights of free Night Nursing care to allow cancer patients in Limerick to die at home surrounded by loved ones.
Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life events bring together people from our community from all walks of life. Relay for Life isn’t just about fundraising. It’s a night filled with entertainment, themed laps, activities, and uplifting stories and most importantly support.
Being involved is a way for me to honour those impacted by cancer, support others going through similar experiences, and contribute to funding life changing cancer research and supports.”
Rosemary Simmons, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at the Irish Cancer Society, said: “The people of Limerick have enthusiastically supported Relay for Life, and in doing so have generously supported the work of The Irish Cancer Society to help fund vital cancer services and research. All of those involved in the event have showed such dedication and commitment and we look forward to seeing Limerick people coming together for this special event.”
