Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer and multi-instrumentalist, Rhiannon Giddens comes to University of Limerick as part of the Irish World Academy‘s 30th Anniversary legacy initiative.
Songs and Stories with Rhiannon Giddens will take place on Thursday, February 13 at 7pm followed by a reception at 8pm. Taking place in Theatre 1 the event is part of the Irish World Academy’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
Announcing the show, organisers said, “we are proud to announce the newly created Irish World Academy Artist Series. The inaugural event in this series of intimate, one-off performances features songs and stories by Academy artist-in-residence, Rhiannon Giddens”
Rhiannon Giddens has made a singular, iconic career out of stretching her brand of folk music, with its miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities, into just about every field imaginable.
A two-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer and multi-instrumentalist, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient, Pulitzer Prize winner, and composer of opera, ballet, and film, Giddens has centred her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased, and advocating for a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins through art.
A seat at the event can be reserved by making a donation of €125 to the UL Foundation with a limited number of seats reserved for students and community partners.
The artist has kindly waived her fee so that all proceeds from this event can go to the Academy Stepping Stones scholarships. These scholarships support students from culturally-rich but economically challenged contexts to pursue postgraduate study at the Irish World Academy.
Founded in 1994 by Professor Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, The Irish World Academy has come to find its true home on the beautiful banks of the River Shannon in a state-of-the-art building, which includes two theatres, recording studio, individual practice rooms and dance studios, provides and inspiring creative space for all those who study there.
The Academy has a strong international presence with students from over 40 countries studying there. With a faculty of excellent performers, academics and industry professionals the experience of studying at the Irish World Academy second to none. It offers a suite of taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in musicians dance related subject areas and its research is at the forefront of these fields of enquiry worldwide.
