Triathlete Rhys Cosgrove to run 100km in a day for Milford Care Centre

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by Rhys Cosgrove, from Clonlara, to raise much-needed funds for Milford Care Centre in Castletroy, Co. Limerick. To try and generate as many donations as possible, Rhys has decided that he will run 100km in a day on Sunday, August 22.

Rhys is 18 years old and is currently doing his Leaving Certificate in St. Munchin’s College in Corbally. He is an avid triathlete but has a genuine love for running independently as his own discipline. Rhys will be doing all his intensive training in his hometown Clonlara, a few minutes away from Limerick City.

Rhys said, “I’ve always wanted to challenge myself to something extreme like this and what better way to do it than for a charity. I had planned to do the 100k during the summer as a personal challenge anyway, so fundraising for Milford has only made the whole process more enjoyable.”

He chose Milford Hospice as they previously gave incredible support to his family while his two grandparents were patients there. Since then, Rhys’ parents have become volunteers at the hospice, so Rhys has decided he too should do his part to give back to a service that continues to provide vital support to families of patients there. He said, “I choose Milford hospice as I feel unfortunately everyone will have a link to Milford at some stage in life, but it is an excellent service and facility, and it’s excellent knowing that the donations are going somewhere worthwhile.”

To train for the run, Rhys will be putting in a lot of miles. Everything will be reasonably slow with the intention of familiarising his legs with the long distance. He will also be including lots of cycling in his training. This will help him a lot whilst taking pressure off his joints.

Rhys, when asked how he was being supported, said, “I have received a lot of support from loads of people with this fundraiser, especially my school, who has been a massive help in advertising and of course for their very generous donations. Most of all, I can’t forget my mam and dad, who have been so supportive of this challenge since day one, and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.”

Rhys is hoping that over the next few months, while he is training for the 100km, the community and those further afield will get behind his campaign and donate whatever they can to his GoFundMe campaign to support this incredible challenge and Milford Hospice. So far, €2,030 has been raised of the €2,500 goal.

He said, “I am very grateful for the excellent feedback and all the support I have gotten from my family and friends. All donations are greatly appreciated and are going towards an excellent cause.”
