Limerick City Tidy Towns Bi-Monthly Award for July-August 2025 has been announced as Richmond Terrace, Henry Street

Limerick City Tidy Towns’ bi-monthly award for July-August 2025 has gone to the warden and residents of Richmond Terrace, Henry Street for their beautiful communal garden and house frontages.  Pictured in the garden receiving the award from Maura O’Neill of Limerick City Tidy Towns are warden Lorna Hodkinson and residents Pat Logue and Eleanor Beirne.   (Photo: Adrian Butler/Limerick Leader)

Maura says, “What’s rare is beautiful, and this can certainly be said of our latest bi-monthly winner which has gone to residential rather than business premises for a change.  It is a good few years since we last gave an award to a private residence, but these beautifully maintained terraced houses and communal garden at the historic Richmond Terrace on Henry Street is fully deserving.  It is a little gated oasis in the heart of the city with its beautiful landscaping and floral display and impeccably maintained historic terraced houses set behind original traditional wrought iron railing and wall”.

Now home to a community of retired people, Richmond Terrace originally comprised seven individual Georgian townhouses on Henry Street Upper. The original lease dated March 1, 1842 was made between Edmond Henry, Earl of Limerick and John Bowerman for all seven houses.   It has had a rich history since then, having been home to many well-known Limerick families throughout the years, and was refurbished in the 1990s when one house was removed. Now owned by the John Nash Charity, it remains a handsome row of six houses and continues to provide comfortable city centre living for its residents nearly 182 years later.    The Trustees of John Nash Charity, whom are all volunteers, look after the building and the garden is maintained by the Warden Lorna Hodkinson and residents Pat Logue, Eleanor Beirne and the recently deceased Willie Lyons.

Richmond Terrace is Limerick City Tidy Town’s fourth winner for 2025 and will be in with a chance to be their Overall Winner for 2025, along with Crew Brewing Company who won their Jan-Feb award, Mike O’Connell Menswear who won in March-April and our May-June winner Katie Dalys Heritage Pub.

If you wish to nominate a business in the city for an award or indeed to volunteer with Limerick City Tidy Towns, they meet every Sunday morning at 11 am at the corner of Thomas Street and O’Connell Street, and on Wednesday evenings at 6 pm outside the White House during summer months. For further details you can like them on Facebook, follow them on Twitter, check their website or email [email protected]
