River Notes: Opera in Limerick is a meticulously researched book which details the city’s rich history of opera.
Local historian, Sharon Slater, commissioned for the project brought together a story capturing the importance of Liemrick’s journey in opera from the 18th century to the present day.
Supported by local businesses, the book shows the cultural importance of opera and creativity in Limerick’s community, all funding for the book has been channelled back into the local economy which displays the city’s commitment to protecting its cultural heritage.
The book looks at Limerick’s vibrant operatic history; the people, places, and groups which helped shape the city’s musical and operatic culture.
From the era of the celebrated soprano Catherine Hayes to the new generation of emerging talents, “River Notes” honours those whose creativity and determination have sustained the operatic tradition in Limerick.
A spokesperson for Limerick Opera Festival said, “We need to look back before we can move forward. The Limerick people, places and organisations mentioned in our book formed us. They created the musical and operatic culture in our City and County. We salute them for their creativity, fortitude, and resilience.”
They added, “The Limerick Opera Festival is endeavouring to create its own piece of history and carry the torch into the future. Society and life in general has changed since the operatic journey began with the great Catherine Hayes but there are new kids on the block carrying on the tradition.”
