Roadshow to take place for collection of Limerick 1916 memorabiliaDid your family participate in any way during the 1916 Rising? Private collectors and members of the public are being asked to contribute to a newly announced exhibition which will take place next year and focus on Limerick’s role during the historical Rising and are asked to participate in a roadshow.

Limerick Museum and Archives has announced that a roadshow will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2015 between 2pm-5pm in the Council Buildings, Merchant’s Quay in Limerick, to collect memorabilia, and are inviting anyone with any images, letters, stories or objects relating to the 1916 experience to attend.

Those who bring original material with them to the roadshow will have it scanned, photographed and catalogued on the day and returned to the owner. Experts will also be available to assist with any queries.

While the general ideas and memories of people’s knowledge of 1916 revolve around Dublin city, there is not much of an acknowledgment of Limerick’s role in the rising, explained Jacqui Hayes, Archivist, Limerick Museum and Archives: “The rising’s focus was centred on Dublin and the G.P.O, but Limerick itself was primed to be a focal point in the revolt.”

“However, due to a combination of bad luck and ill-communication, the plans for Limerick fell to the wayside.  Despite this lack of dramatic revolutionary action in the city during 1916, the nationalist movement moved through the motions, before coming to a head in 1918 with a number of violent events. Between examining what life was like during this period, to focusing on the individual lives and stories of the men and women involved in the Rising, this exhibition will detail many intimate and personal stories while also viewing Limerick’s place in the overall narrative of 1916.”

Ms Hayes said the themes that 1916 evokes are extremely varied, and Limerick Museum and Archives will be intertwining these evocative themes with the stories of the people of Limerick, as well as the national political figures of that time.

The roadshow is free entry and open to all members of the public. It will take place in the Exhibition Area, Council Buildings, Limerick City and County Council, Merchant’s Quay Limerick on Saturday, 20th June between 12-5pm.
