Robert Burns Night 2016 at Bobby Byrnes Bar

Robert Burns Night 2016 at Bobby Byrnes Bar promises to be a “night of tipsy dance and jollity” this January.

On Monday, January 25, from 8.30pm Bobby Byrnes Bar will play host to a typically Scottish meal to mark the night celebrating Scotland’s national poet.

This is the 11th year that the event will be taking place. Organised by Michael Potter and Noel Flannery, this year’s celebration will feature Mr. Potter in the role of compere – and he is anticipated to roll out a number of Robbie Burns’s classic poems.

Haggis and sandwiches, neeps and tatties, alongside pipe and violin music, and many more Scottish traditions will also feature on the night.

There will be live performances of songs as well as poetry.  Anyone who wishes to contribute and perform a piece of literature is more than welcome to do so.

Capt Michael Egan will be present on the night, playing his bagpipes, Mary O’Donoghue will be playing a piece on the violin. Gordon Lessels, a Scotsman now living in Limerick, will perform Robbie Burns’s signature poem the Tam O Shanter.

The haggis meat will be supplied by Pat O’Doherty’s butchers, in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh.

Pat O’ Doherty is famous for supplying the G8 conference when it was held in Northern Ireland, as well as Harrods department store in London.

And for the first time, a raffle will take place on the night. All proceeds from the raffle will go towards helping with the cost of organising the annual Burns night celebration, with Michael saying he will also further donations are welcome on the night.

Burns Night celebrations have been held since 1801, five years after the death of the ‘Scottish Bard’. Burns Night continues to be celebrated across the globe and is a date not to be missed in Limerick or especially Bobby Byrnes pub.

The celebrations initially took place on January 29, this date was revised to January 25 after it was discovered this was in fact, the date of Burns’ birth.
