Limerick author Roisin Meaney held the launch of her new book in O’Mahony’s bookstore on O Connell Street last week and many of her avid readers came out to show their support for their favourite writer. She was delighted to meet everyone and she was thrilled with the support of multi award winning author and 2013 Limerick Person of the Year Donal Ryan who came by to get his signed copy of her fantastic new novel. It’s a sequel to One Summer, which was published in 2012 and which is set on Roone, a small island off the west coast of Ireland. Roisin tells me, “I loved those characters and that place so much I had to go back to them. There they all were, pretty much as I’d left them two years earlier, and I was delighted to take up their stories and see what came out. This book, incidentally, is the only one my editor didn’t want me to change at all when she read it: ‘It’s perfect just the way it is,’ she said.” Roisin was born in Listowel, Co. Kerry but made Limerick her home many years ago. She has lived in England (where she worked as an advertising copywriter), Africa (where she taught High School English), and the USA (where she worked as a waitress). She also spent time teaching at a primary school in Ireland. She is the author of several novels and is often heralded as ‘the New Maeve Binchy’, Roisin is a constant (/regular?) presence in the Top Five Bestseller list and is taking her place among the top writers of contemporary women’s fiction. Roisin currently shares her home in Limerick city with an extremely picky cat, and tries to balance her chocolate habit with Pilates and juicing.
