Ronald McDonald House family fun day at UL Boathouse

Published

on

A Ronald McDonald House family fun day was held at the Boathouse at the University of Limerick this past Saturday, September 12th, in aid of Ronald McDonald House (RMHC), which aims to help the families of sick children at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin, Dublin.

RMHC provides accommodation and support for families whose children are seriously ill, hospitalised or are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Families gathered on the day to support the worthy cause, bringing children to take part in the day filled with entertainment, finishing the day off with refreshments in the Boathouse.

Colm O’Brien, who helped to organise the event, said that the day was about raising awareness of the facility, thanking everyone who turned out in support.

Mr O’Brien, who has first-hand knowledge of the good that this service offers, has a special regard for the facility after availing of their services on two occasions when his young daughter underwent two successful operations in Crumlin Hospital.

The event began at 2pm and lasted until 5pm, and hosted a 5k family walk. Entry was €5 per person and €10 per family, and all funds raised to toward the Dublin facility. The day was part of a National Fun Day, with events being held throughout the country at a total of nine centres.

Children enjoyed the different stalls, sitting down to have their faces painted, practising their archery skills and taking part in the Teddy Bear Hospital stall set up.

The Teddy Bear Hospital, set up by Graduate Entry Medical School (GEMS) students to educate children and to help alleviate anxiety about hospitals, dressed children up in full scrub gear, guiding them to look after any ‘sick’ bears that needed their attention.
