Rosie Foley’s New York swim in memory of her late brother Anthony Foley saw the Killaloe woman circumnavigate the rivers of New York alongside her best friend, Andrea Newport.
Irish rugby legend Anthony Foley was a Rugby Union player and head coach of Munster until he passed away suddenly in October 2016 at the age of 42.
The tragedy shocked the nation as well as the rugby world and inspired his sisters Rosie and Orla to compete in numerous physical challenges to raise money for three charities close to Anthony’s heart.
Rosie recently travelled to ‘The Big Apple’ in Munster-inspired red togs with ‘FOLEY 8’ on the back – a nod to Anthony’s former position on the pitch.
Rosie, previously a swimming instructor at the now-closed St. Enda’s Swimming Complex, has swum across the English Channel, Galway Bay and the island of Cork City in the past.
Rosie and Andrea completed the 28.5-mile swim in eight hours and 28 minutes and swam under all 20 bridges around Manhattan Island.
Rosie and Andrea were accompanied by three support boats and a kayaker during the swim and were cheered on from dry land by her husband Pat, their three children Oisin, Brenda and Siofra and Andrea’s partner Alex.
The challenge was completed to raise money for the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation and children’s charities Children at Risk in Ireland (CARI) and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).
Meanwhile, Rosie’s sister Orla has cycled the Wild Atlantic Way and across France, and hopes to cycle the rest of Ireland’s coast in the near future to shine a light on wellbeing.
All funds raised from Orla’s cycle will go directly to the three charities mentioned above, in honour the legacy of the late Anthony Foley. So far, the fundraiser has raised €31,519 of its €40,000 goal.
